Once you learn to read, you will be forever free" is a quote by Frederick Douglass. Students in our school can attest to this! One attribute that our students share is a love of reading and books; which is why it is so important to get high quality literature and nonfiction into their hands.
Imagine students walking through the hallway with their noses in a book--and the main problem we have is that they run into the person in front of them. Then, upon arriving back at the classroom--students go crazy because the 3rd book in their favorite series has arrived and is on display! The students in my school are bibliomaniacs! I cannot keep up with their voracious reading. They consume books like other students consume candy. Our school is full of students in grades 4-8 who have a constant dialog about favorite authors, new books coming out, and the latest movies based on their favorite books. We even have a book blog created and maintained by students. Because our school is located in a large city within a high-poverty area and has a limited overall budget, students have not have the benefit of a school library until now. Thanks to the hard work of students, staff, and parents, we have a physical space with new furniture on the way! Now we need to to fill the bookshelves.
